about

“La Tribu De Los Ritmos Rotos”

After having recorded music in Cairo, Congo, London and New York, world wanderer Ibn Itaka lands in Seville in 2023 and brings to life a new musical project, “La Tribu de Los Ritmos Rotos”. This jazz infused electronic odyssey is the culmination of Ibn Itaka’s journey in Seville, where he was deeply engrossed in its vibrant Spanish culture and enchanted by the city’s people, architecture, underground electronic music culture and rich artistic history. For this project, Ibn Itaka sought out local Andalusian label, Flumo Recordings, as partners in bringing this musical piece to life. The beguiling Spanish-style trumpet lines are played by the prolific Adam O’Farrill, son of Latin Jazz legend Arturo O’Farrill, while the smooth sparse keys are provided by Isaac Sleator, Joji’s Musical Director. BIYDIY’s own American Mathew Worldwide provides the track with an underground musical edge through drum programming that is reminiscent of Detroit Techno and Electro legends such as Omar S, Drexciya, Underground Resistance. Ibn Itaka, also the co-founder of the global indie label Abu Recordings behind Saint Levant, Waleed, and Felukah, also curated a an exciting Bass & Garage remix for this project, composed by up-and-coming DJ/Producer Hartta, which was mixed by local DJ/Producer & Engineer David “Suni” Sanchez and mastered by local legends Califato 3/4 Sergio Seroca.

The title of this electronic composition translates to “the tribe of broken rhythms”, which plays on old Spanish poetry naming styles. The title alludes to all the dynamic broken rhythms that are consumed by Seville’s people, which span from Breakbeat rhythms to Flamenco rhythms. It also alludes to the history of Black People in Seville and the whole Black experience in the Iberian Peninsula.

“To me, being Sevilla has been constantly being amongst different things that juxtapose each other. All the contrasts are beautiful. My goal with this composition is to help bring visibility the Afro-Iberian experience and how its history affects Art. I’m just following my ancestors” Ibn Itaka
